The Yankees are looking at trading for Kansas City Royals outfielder Michael A. Taylor, reports Jon Morosi.

Taylor has had a resurgence in Kansas City this year -— the 2021 Gold Glove Award winner is hitting .265 with a .724 OPS, both the second-best marks of his career. His .342 on-base percentage is a career-high.

Taylor has played only center field since the start of the 2021 season, so bringing him in would likely leave Giancarlo Stanton or Aaron Hicks in left field and Aaron Judge back in his natural position in right — and who knows what would happen with Joey Gallo, because he is easily the worst of the four outfielders listed above.

Gallo, a strikeout machine who was acquired from the Texas Rangers in 2021 and has struggled to handle the New York spotlight, has been consistently underperforming throughout the season, batting .166.

The Yankees are also looking at Taylor’s teammate, outfielder Andrew Benintendi. However, he comes at a price Brian Cashman may not be willing to pay, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman:

“They have held talks about acquiring Royals outfielder Andrew Benintendi (and likely other available outfielders) while also conducting discussions with other teams about dealing away Joey Gallo, sources told The Post.

The Yankees so far have found the price tag too high on Benintendi, a good contact hitter and former Gold Glove winner who was part of the 2018 Red Sox’s World Series-winning team.

Like most teams, it is believed the Royals have started out by seeking at least one good prospect for Benintendi, who will be a free agent after the year.

The Yankees are in an enviable position as a dominant team on a record pace, and Matt Carpenter’s recent emergence as an offensive force with an ability to play some outfield has diminished the need to make drastic changes.”
