Madison Ianniello, a senior at South Brunswick High School, is this year's winner of the Middlesex County American Legion Oratorical Contest.
The finals were held Jan. 26 at American Legion Post 211, Sayreville. Each of four contestants delivered a prepared oration about some phase of the Constitution of the United States, as well as an oration on a randomly assigned constitutional topic.
The purpose of The American Legion High School Oratorical Contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution on the part of all high school students. Objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, thinking and speaking clearly and preparation for accepting the duties and responsibilities of American citizenship. Students begin competition at the Post level and progress through County, District, Regional and State competitions.
Ianniello, sponsored by American Legion Post 401, will now compete in the regional contest on Feb. 2 at the Woodbridge Municipal Building.
Ianniello plans to study political science and international affairs in college.

J.P. Stevens High School
The J.P. Stevens High School Band Program will be presenting its annual Winter Concert on Wednesday, Feb.13 at 7 p.m. at the school, which is located at 855 Grove Ave. in Edison. Under the direction of Andrew DeNicola and John Zazzali, the program’s Symphonic Band, Freshman Band and nationally-recognized Wind Ensemble will be performing.
The program is proud to announce that 40 students were selected through audition in December to the Central Jersey Region Band; four of those students were selected on a second instrument. More recently, 28 of the students were selected through audition to the All-State Band; one student was selected on a second instrument. In addition, nine of the students were selected to participate in the All-Eastern Honors Band. These selections represent the largest number from any one school in New Jersey.
This free event is open to the community.

Do you have what it takes to protect and preserve it? Now’s your chance to find out: Applications are now being accepted for the Middlesex County Youth Conservation Corps.
The County recognizes that it takes a team effort to keep open spaces clean and safe. Nature needs to be protected not only from natural forces like storms, but from pollution and misuse. That’s where the Conservation Corps, made up of students age 16 and over, comes in. If you enjoy being outdoors and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, it may be the right opportunity for you.
Conservation Corps crew members earn $10 per hour and will work Saturdays from April 6 through June 8. Work will primarily take place at County Open Spaces in Old Bridge, Monroe and South Brunswick.
“It takes time and effort to properly care for our trails and Open Spaces, and our Youth Conservation Corps has risen to the challenge each year,” said Freeholder Charles Kenny, chair of the County’s Infrastructure Management Committee. “Here, students grow as people while helping our environment grow, through teamwork and responsibility.”
“Our Youth Conservation Corps is a tremendous asset to the County, and a major reason why our Open Spaces remain clean, safe and beautiful,” said Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “The County wants to promote good environmental practices and safe, educational activities for our students, and this program offers the best of both goals.”
Activities include trail building, litter clean-up, invasive species removal and wildlife habitat improvements. Applicants should be enthusiastic, motivated and willing to work and learn as a part of a team. Also, applicants must be able to walk several miles and stand for extended periods of time, willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions, and able to use various hand tools.

Students from The Wardlaw+Hartridge School in Edison attended a Teen Health Seminar at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. The goal of this program is to educate the students about health issues and hospital career choices.
The first half of the program included a series of lectures by physicians, nurses and selected hospital staff. The formal presentations were followed by a tour and explanation of several departments including the morgue. Students had the opportunity to learn about a variety of health professions and to ask questions regarding possible college choices. On Thursday, Jan. 17, Thomas Edison EnergySmart Charter School (TEECS) celebrated its monthly Green Day. TEECS holds a Green Day once a month to emphasis the importance of taking care of the planet and each other. Each month there is a different theme and the students dress in green clothes for the day. On Jan. 17, the Lean Green Cleanup Machine came for his second visit and held an assembly for the students. Jay Mankita is an experienced teaching artist, an award winning songwriter, and an engaging children's performer. He holds various presentations and workshops about ecology and nutrition. In keeping with the Energy Smart school theme, Mankita gave a performance on the topic of recycling.
